Turkey to stage military exercise near Syria border

Source : Xinhua

ANKARA, May 6 (Xinhua) -- The Turkish Armed Forces is set to stage a 10- day "planned exercise" in the southern province of Adana bordering on Syria, Turkish Daily News reported Monday.

The exercise, named the Yildirim-2013 Mobilization, is slated for May 6-15, according to a statement by the Turkish General Staff.

The exercise, to be conducted at the Air Forces 10th Tanker Base Command, aims to test the army's mobilization system and the coordination between public institutions and the armed forces in case of any mobilization, the statement said.

The Turkish General Staff said 12 vehicles and 60 stand-by personnel, as well as private transportation companies will take part in the exercise.

Turkey is facing an influx of Syrian refugees with the worsening situation in Syria.

Last week, one Turkish border guard was killed and six others were wounded in a clash at the Syrian border.

US, NATO Prepare Syria Intervention: US Official

Source  :  http://www.almanar.com

A top US commander in Europe said that the US military and NATO are drawing up plans for direct military intervention in Syria.

Adm. James Stavridis, head of the Pentagon’s European Command told a Senate hearing last Tuesday that the US military is “looking at a variety of options” and is “prepared if called upon to be engaged.”

Declaring that there was “no end in sight to a vicious civil war,” Stavridis told the panel that “the option of assisting the opposition forces in Syria in ways that would break the deadlock are being actively explored by NATO members,” the Washington Post reported.

The admiral addressed the Senate Armed Service Committee, saying that US and NATO discussions have included providing “lethal support” to the anti- government militias and using direct military force to impose “no-fly zones” in Syria and enforce “arms embargoes” against the Syrian government.

Both Britain and France have called for an emergency meeting of European Union foreign ministers this week on their demand for lifting an EU arms embargo that bars member states from directly shipping weapons to the Western-backed armed opposition.

British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President François Hollande have indicated that they were prepared to act unilaterally if the EU fails to bow to their demand.

For its part, Germany voiced opposition to the lifting of the ban, warning that it will escalate the bloodshed, risk arming Al Qaeda-linked forces, and potentially spread violence throughout the region.

Washington, meanwhile, has signaled its support for British and French moves to directly arm the anti-government militias.

Last Monday, US Secretary of State John Kerry declared that “the United States does not stand in the way of other countries that made a decision to provide arms, whether it’s France or Britain or others

Turkish demonstrators protest against Patriot systems

Source : Strategic Culture Foundation

Turkish people have once again protested against the presence of NATO forces and its Patriot missile batteries in Turkey, expressing solidarity with the people of Syria.

Anti-capitalist Muslim groups and activists took to the streets of Istanbul on Saturday and chanted anti-NATO slogans.

The protesters say they do not want Turkey to be a NATO member state. They are also opposed to a war in neighboring Syria.

The demonstration in Istanbul came a day after anti-US protesters outside the Turkish prime minister’s office in Ankara rallied against the official visit of US Secretary of State John Kerry, who was in the country to coordinate plans to support militants fighting the Syrian government.

In November 2012, NATO announced a plan to deploy six Patriot missile batteries to “protect Turkey” from potential Syrian missile strikes. The Patriots are deployed by the United States, Germany, and the Netherlands, and they became operational in the southern cities of Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, and Adana in February.

The Western alliance says the missiles are to avoid dangers caused by the crisis in Syria. However, countries like Iran, Russia and China have repeatedly voiced their opposition to the deployment. They say the move will only increase regional tensions.

Possible methods of coalition withdrawal from Afghanistan

Source : Trend.Az

A plenty of time before the last NATO troops leave Afghanistan, but when the time comes in two years, they must all be out. Therefore, countries involved in this processes must begin preparatory measures now.

Perhaps these issues will be amongst the top issues in discussions at the Obama-Karzai meeting. It will be necessary to discuss the challenges, facing the 3,000 to 20,000 U.S troops that would remain in the country after the NATO withdrawal, at this meeting.

According to the U.S. Central Command's calculations, during these two years, the U.S army should take around 2,200 containers and vehicles from Afghanistan monthly for 2 years in order to completely remove all equipment and facilities. Around 500 containers and vehicles will pass through Central Asia. Some 400 units of this volume will be transported by railway through Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Russia, and the remaining 100 by trucks through Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and the Caucasus.

Head of U.S. Central Command, Gen. James Mattis visited Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan from March 28 - April 2, 2012 to fully discuss these issues and meet with the presidents of these countries to exchange views on this and other issues.

The conditions, developed by Central Command in respect to its return transit, were presented on maps and information slides in October of 2012. Around 1,200 units of rolling stock and 1,000 containers must start moving monthly.

Distribution via transport networks is as follows: Dubai multimodal transit - 200 units of rolling stock / 200 containers; Jordanian multimodal transit - 50 units of rolling stock / 50 containers; Russian route - 200 units of rolling stock / 200 containers; KKT route (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan) - 100 containers; Pakistani corridor GLOC - taking out the rest rolling stock and containers.

It is interesting that some slides are a map, which shows all the routes through which the goods may be exported from Afghanistan. The "Russian route" by railway also runs through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, while the KKT truck route, which is interesting, ensures transportation via a longer route to the Caspian port of Aktau to Baku by sea, and then through the Caucasus and Turkey to Europe, rather than through Russia.

It is also interesting that multi-modal transit centers, organized by the U.S. and NATO in Eurasia, such as in Baku, Ulyanovsk (Russia) and Constanta (Romania), appear not to be a priority, because quite a large amount of cargo is expected to be delivered through Dubai and Jordan, rather than through them. The same volume of cargo as to Central Asia will be delivered to these Middle Eastern countries and this will be done despite the fact that the goods will have to be partially transported by air.

According to the slides, the motto of the U.S. Central Command is timely, convenient, flexible delivery without disruption of supply.

Turkish FM: Patriot missiles will be returned upon the cessation of tensions on its border

Source : Trend.Az

Patriot anti-air missiles will be sent back upon the elimination of tensions on the Syrian-Turkish border, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Thursday, Anadolu reports.

He reiterated that the Patriot air defense system is not directed against any country and is aimed at defending Turkey.

As earlier reported, the shipment of Patriot missiles, equipment, and the arrival of 400 U.S. servicemen within a NATO mission for strengthening the air defenses of Turkey against possible Syrian missile strikes is expected to be completed by late January.

Turkey requested Patriot missiles from NATO in late November 2012 to protect against a possible air attack by Syria.

The Syrian army periodically bombs border areas with Turkey. In October, as a result of another attack conducted by the Syrian Air Force, 6 Turkish citizens were killed.

Anti-government disturbances have continued in Syria for more than a year and a half. According to the UN Human Rights Commissioner, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria exceeds 60,000. More than 230,000 have become refugees and there are around three million people in need of humanitarian assistance. Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.

Russia Warns Against NATO Missiles on Syrian Border

Source : RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, November 22 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Foreign Ministry cautioned Thursday against Turkey's intention to deploy NATO Patriot missiles on its border with Syria.

"The militarization of the Turkish-Syrian border would be an alarming signal," said ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich. "It would do nothing to foster stability in the region."

"Our advice to our Turkish colleagues is to use their influence on the Syrian opposition to draw them closer to dialogue, instead of flexing their muscles and taking the situation down a dangerous path," he added.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Wednesday that Turkey's request to deploy the missiles would be considered soon. Ankara says the missile system is necessary to protect its border with conflict-torn Syria.

US Patriot surface-to-air missiles were last deployed to Turkey in 1991 and 2003, during the two Gulf Wars.

Turkey has opened fire several times in recent weeks across its border with Syria in retaliation for Syrian shelling, which killed five Turkish civilians in October. It has also provided shelter to refugees fleeing the violence in Syria and has been one of President Bashar al-Assad’s harshest critics during the almost 17-month revolt against his rule.

Tensions between Turkey and Syria flared dangerously this summer after Damascus shot down a Turkish fighter that had violated its airspace. Turkey threatened retaliation if there was any repeat of the incident, although it admitted the plane had mistakenly strayed slightly into Syria.

Lukashevich also denied Russian media reports that Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was planning to meet on November 26 with the Syrian opposition.

The Syrian conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives since the start of an uprising against Assad in March 2011, according to various Syrian opposition groups.

Russia - along with China - has drawn heavy Western criticism for its refusal to sanction UN sanctions against Assad's regime, Moscow sole remaining ally in the Arab world. Moscow said the proposed UN resolutions betrayed a pro-rebel bias and would do nothing to bring peace.

Putin vowed earlier this year not to allow a repeat of the “Libya scenario,” which saw the ouster and murder of long-time Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi after a NATO military campaign.

But Moscow has denied it is supporting Assad in the conflict and says it will respect the will of the "Syrian people

2 policemen, 6 militants killed in N. Afghanistan

Via : Trend.Az

to six Taliban militants and two policemen were killed following a clash between the police and militants in Afghanistan's northern province of Faryab overnight, the police said Wednesday, Xinhua reported.

"A group of armed militants, numbered around 20, launched an armed attack against Afghan Local Police (ALP) checkpoints in Shirin Tagab district, sparking a gun battle lasting for hours Tuesday night," acting-provincial police chief, Nabi Mullahkhil, told Xinhua.

He said the fighting left two ALP cops and six militants dead in the province 425 km northwest of Afghan capital Kabul.

"A Taliban deputy shadowy district chief for the district named Qari Firoz was among the dead and the ALP also arrested three militants besides seizing weapons after the clash," he added.

In addition, a Taliban key commander named Qari Hizatullah was killed by Afghan police in Chardara district in northern Kunduz province Tuesday evening, provincial police chief Samiullah Qatra told Xinhua earlier Wednesday.

The police official said that Hizatullah was responsible for several subversive activities and ambush-style attacks on Afghan and NATO- led coalition forces in the province 250 km north of Kabul.

However, the Taliban insurgent group, which announced the launching of an annual rebel offensive from May 3 against Afghan government and some 100,000 NATO-led coalition forces, has not to make comments yet.

Russian Navy (BareyClass) Subs to Deployed in Russian North, Pacific Fleets

Borey Class Subs to be Deployed in Russian North, Pacific Fleets | Defense | RIA Novosti

Two Borey class strategic nuclear-powered submarines, the Yuri Dolgoruky and the Alexander Nevsky, will enter service with the Russian Navy, one with the North Fleet and the other with the Pacific Fleet, Anatoly Shlemov, head of defense contracts at the United Shipbuilding Corporation, said on Friday.

“The Alexander Nevsky will enter service with the Pacific Fleet, the main one, the Yuri Dolgoruky, with the North Fleet,” Shlemov said. The crews of the submarines will begin training exercises on the North Fleet and later the crew of the Alexander Nevsky will prepare to go by the Northern Sea Route for its further service in the Pacific Fleet. “Usually, this takes a year,” Shlemov said. The Borey class submarines are expected to constitute the core of the Russian strategic submarine fleet, replacing the aging Project 941 (NATO Typhoon class) and Project 667 class (Delta-3 and Delta-4) boats. Russia is planning to build eight Borey and Borey-A class subs by 2020. A Borey class strategic submarine is 170 meters (580 feet) long, has a hull diameter of 13 meters (42 feet), a crew of 107, including 55 officers, a maximum depth of 450 meters (about 1,500 feet) and a submerged speed of about 29 knots. All the Borey class strategic submarines will carry the Bulava ballistic missiles, up to 16 ballistic missiles with multiple warheads.
