New Arab-Israeli Battalion to Fight Hezbollah

Source : Almanar.lb

The Zionist entity has recently formed an Arab battalion within its military ranks called 'Arabs of the Israeli army' dubbed as "Horv", particularly designed to fight Hezbollah in a future confrontation.

According to Syria Truth website, the Zionist army command revealed that officers of the new military unit are "Druze supporters of Walid Jumblatt and Wahhabi Bedouins known for their dogmatic hostility to the Shiites."

In this regard, the website recalls the statements of Muslim Brotherhood or Salafist leaders of the insurgence in Syria who showed affinities with the Zionist entity.

"Israel and the Sunni Muslims in Syria are in the same front against the Shiites, the Nasserists and the Majous who all have a joint project to eliminate the Jews," said a member of the so-called Syrian National Council (SNC) Khaled Khoja for the Zionist Channel 2, asking what he dubbed "Israel" to bomb Syria.

Regarding the battalion, the Zionist entity has sought to make a large propaganda and shed light on its recent maneuvers. This would reassure the Israeli public, which has not yet forgotten the heinous defeat its army suffered in the July 2006 war on Lebanon.

The unit commander, Shadi Abu Fares, told the Zionist army radio that the battalion has completed intensive training in the Syrian Golan Heights, revealing that the unit has developed new methods and tactics to fight the enemy in Lebanon as efficiently as possible."

"Fighting in Lebanon requires a severe camouflage style, given the need to slow the advance of the troops on the ground", he stressed, adding that "new battle techniques and tactics adopted by the battalion operated recently are perfectly adapted to the fight against the systems supported by Hezbollah, including the use of long-rage heavy fire."

"We worked on tactics and techniques of the battlefield adopted by the Israeli army, including open and associated combat zones. We have applied them with suitable modifications to the real ground against Hezbollah, as the battalion has rich experience, and we have a prior knowledge of what awaits us in the next war in Lebanon," he went on to say.

The Zionist radio has focused on what it considers the success of Horv while exercising its functions, noting that its troops have acquired operational experience, particularly during their task in Lebanon for many years.

"During the Second Lebanon War in 2006, it (Horv) was the first combat unit to cross the border into Lebanon, and the last to return. This is the reason behind the many medals of appreciation it gained," said the radio, knowing that the 2006 war on Lebanon was a major blow for the Zionist entity.

The radio correspondent quoted the commander of the northern front, Colonel Sion Ertson, as saying that "Horv should teach all the Israeli army how to effectively fight against Hezbollah."

"The maneuvers were held in the Upper Galilee and the Golan Heights, lasting for three consecutive days, where tanks and armored vehicles participated," the reported said, focusing on the role of special engineering forces in opening roads to facilitate the infantry movement.

As for the fighting methods, the Zionist journalist pointed out that the exercises were based on intensive fire shooting and the use of artillery "to prevent the enemy to raise his head."

For his part, Abu Fares voiced that the military cannot note that Horv battalion is ready for all situations.

"After completing training missions, Horv should be deployed on the border with Lebanon. We will work to prevent the infiltration of any incursion from Lebanon. We will also maintain its defensive position and activate it. At the same time, we will conduct additional activities which we can not reveal their details," he said.

Meanwhile, Ertson said "the changes in the region require us to be ready for war, but with the battalion Horv I'm much more confident than any other battalion in the IDF."

Maneuvers of Arabs in the Zionist army battalion attended by the commander of the northern region in the Zionist military General Yair Golan, and the brigade commander of the Galilee, Brigadier Hertsey Halevy.

Worthy to mention that the Zionist army has recently paved a new way at the northern border with Lebanon in an attempt to terrorize citizens and spread panic among them.

Since the 2006 July war on Lebanon, the Zionist entity has spared no chance to violate the Lebanese sovereignty in flagrant breaching of the UN resolution 1701.

Israeli Troops Kidnap Two Lebanese in Shebaa

Source : Ahlul Bayt News Agency

The Zionist enemy troops kidnapped on Tuesday two Lebanese farmers, Yusuf Rahil and Yusuf Zahra in Shaba Heights southern Lebanon, Al- Manar Website correspondent reported.

Later on, the enemy military unit took the detained citizens to the Radar checkpoint in Upper Mount Hermon.

Moreover, more than 50 Zionist soldiers deployed in front of Wazzani Fort park following improvement works in the park near the Wazzani River.

The correspondent also reported that a Merkava tank and two Hummer military vehicles crossed the technical fence adjacent to Wazzani Fort and deployed on a hill overlooking the park.

In the meantime, Zionist drones carried out false raids over Lebanon hovering over the southern towns of the country at low altitude.

The Zionist army has recently paved a new way at the border with Lebanon in an attempt to terrorize citizens and spread panic among them.

Since the 2006 July war on Lebanon, the Zionist entity has spared no chance to violate the Lebanese sovereignty in flagrant breaching of the UN resolution 1701.

Lebanese army seizes leading Sunni cleric's headquarters

Source : Xinhua

BEIRUT, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Lebanon's army seized Monday a leading Sunni cleric's headquarters in a southern city and arrested a number of his gunmen in an operation that left 16 soldiers killed, a security source said.

The army stormed the headquarters located in the Abra suburb of Sidon city while Sheikh Ahmed Al Assir fled the area, the source said, adding ambulances transported over 50 wounded and 20 dead bodies to hospitals.

According to the army, the operation was launched as Al Assir's supporters attacked an army checkpoint in the area.

Volleys of gunshots were heard in Abra as the army scoured the security zone of the headquarters, and smoke could be seen billowing from some buildings in the area, TV footage showed.

Voice of Lebanon radio said Al Assir and his close aide, retired singer Fadhl Shaker, "managed to flee the security zone in Abra around 4:00 p.m. (1300 GMT) with the help of armed groups."

Media reports said the two headed to the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp where they have hardline Islamist allies, but the security source said those reports are unconfirmed.

Meanwhile, militants of different nationalities belonging to " Jund al-Sham" and "Fatah al-Islam" groups clashed with the army in an attempt to rescue the gunmen. The fighting reached near the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp and a number of markets.

Monday's violence in Abra followed a clash between Al Assir's supporters and Hezbollah supporters last week which killed one person.

The incident prompted State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr to issue search and investigation warrants against Al Assir and 123 others including his brother and Shaker earlier on Monday.

Also, Lebanese President Michel Suleiman on Monday voiced solidarity with the military institution and called on the army to arrest those who assault it at a security meeting held at Baabbda presidential palace.

Lebanon's Shiite party Hezbollah slammed the attack against the army by supporters of Al Assir. "The army is the guarantor of civil peace in Lebanon and any attack against it is tantamount to an attack against the entire nation."

The militant party demanded "all measures be taken to put a complete stop to such assaults against the army and bring the assailants to justice."

Lebanon army slams 'plot' to embroil country in Syria war

Source : Maan News Agency

BEIRUT (AFP) -- The Lebanese army warned on Friday that a plot was afoot to embroil the country in the 26-month conflict in neighboring Syria, as deadly clashes between Damascus supporters and opponents inside Lebanon multiply.

"The army command... calls on citizens to be wary of plots aimed at taking Lebanon backwards and dragging it into an absurd war," a statement said, adding that it would give an "armed response to any armed action".

"The army command has been trying for several months to work firmly, determinedly and patiently to prevent Lebanon being turned into a battlefield for regional conflicts and to prevent any spillover of the events in Syria," it said.

"But in recent days, some groups have seemed determined to stoke security tensions... against the backdrop of the political divisions in Lebanon over military developments in Syria."

Although Lebanon has officially adopted a position of neutrality in Syria's war, its people are sharply divided with Shiite Muslims backing President Bashar Assad's regime and Sunnis the rebellion.

The army urged "citizens to express their political views on events in Lebanon and Syria by peaceful and democratic means and not to be driven by groups wanting to use violence as a means to achieve their ends".

It said it would "spare no effort to prevent innocent people from paying the price for political designs aimed at destroying Lebanon".

The statement was the strongest from the Lebanese army since the uprising against Assad's rule erupted in March 2011.

It came a day after soldiers came under fire in the northern city of Tripoli, as well as its flashpoint districts of Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tebbaneh.

The two neighborhoods have witnessed frequent clashes linked to the Syrian conflict, and on each occasion the army has sought to impose a ceasefire.

On Wednesday night, two armed men, one of them a Syrian, were killed in a shootout with the army at the entrance of the town of Arsal, near the border with Syria, the military said.

Arsal, home to Sunnis who support the Syrian uprising, is a conduit for rebel fighters, their weapons and refugees across the border with the war-torn country.

On Thursday, one person was killed and several others wounded in clashes in the heart of Tripoli, Lebanon's second-biggest city.

It came after the public intervention of Lebanon's Shiite Hezbollah movement alongside Assad's troops in the battle for the border town of Qusayr which culminated in its recapture on Wednesday and deepened political division

1 dead, 2 injured in clashes at Lebanon's largest Palestinian refugee camp

Source : Xinhua

BEIRUT, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Fierce clashes erupted in the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon around midnight on Saturday, leaving one killed and two others injured.

The clashes between the Bilal Badr Islamist Salafist group and Fatah movement took place at the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon.

The victim was identified as Moawiya Mathloum, while the injured included a woman called Mirna Shahatha and another man, state-run National News Agency reported.

The conflict continued until the early hours of Sunday morning.

The Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp has been the scene of recurring violence as Islamist and secular Palestinian factions vie for power within the area. According to long-standing convention, the Lebanese army does not enter the 12 refugee camps on its soil but leaves security to the Palestinians themselves.

So far, 400,000 Palestinian refugees are living in the 12 camps.

U.S. stresses commitment to Lebanon's initiative to implement UNSCR 1701

Source : Xinhua

BEIRUT, May 2 (Xinhua) -- A visiting U.S. defense official said Thursday that the United States supports Lebanon's initiatives to implement its obligations under United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1701.

UNSCR 1701, which ended the Israel-Hezbollah War in 2006, expanded the mandate of UN troops in southern Lebanon and pressed Israel to end violations of Lebanon's airspace and to withdraw from northern Ghajar village.

William Wechsler, U.S. deputy assistant secretary of defense for special operations and combating terrorism, stressed the strong and sustained military cooperation between the two countries and his country's commitment to a stable, sovereign and independent Lebanon, according to a statement issued by the U.S. Embassy in Beirut.

Wechsler emphasized continuing joint efforts between the two sides to strengthen the capacity of Lebanese army as the "sole legitimated defense force in securing Lebanon's borders and defending the sovereignty and independence of the state."

Meanwhile, he discussed with Lebanese army Commander General Jean Qahwaji about the local political and security situation and other regional issues, said the statement.

Hezbollah fighters in Syria to help Lebanese nat''ls - Nasrallah

Source :  http://www.kuna.net.kw

BEIRUT, April 30 (KUNA) -- Secretary General of Lebanon's Hezbollah group Hassan Nasrallah said Tuesday the groups sent its fighters to the Syrian town of Al-Qusayr, Homs Governorate, to protect the Lebanese nationals from "the armed groups" opposed to the Syrian regime. "We'll never hesitate in offering help the Lebanese nationals who are liable to attacks from armed groups there," he said in a speech aired by Al-Manar satellite TV channel. He warned against any possible attacks by the 'takfiri' (a Muslim declaring another Muslim an unbeliever) armed groups against the Shiite shrines in Syria, saying: "The demolition of Al-Sayyeda Zaynab shrine in Damascus will trigger serious consequences." He challenged the Syrian opposition groups saying: "You will never be able to topple the regime by military means; the battle is long." "Syria has true friends who will never let it fall in the hands of Washington or Tel Aviv or the hands of the armed takfiri groups," Nasrallah argued. He dismissed recent media speculations that Hezbollah conceal its victims in Syria, saying: "We don't cover up our martyrs to bury them in installment as some media claim. Such claims are part of the psychological war that aims to defame Hezbollah." "The ultimate goal of what's happening in Syria is not only to neutralize Syria's role in the resistance (against Israel) and the equation of the Arab-Israeli conflict, but to destroy Syria as a state, army and society as well," he affirmed. He reaffirmed a statement made by his group last Thursday that the group did not send a drone towards Israel. The drone was intercepted and downed by the Israeli Air Force after intruding the Israeli airspace a few miles off Haifa city. On the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Nasrallah said recent press reports indicate that the United States and the Arab and Gulf countries are lobbying for a certain settlement to the conflict which will be unacceptable for the Palestinians as before. "Talk about such a settlement always coincides with an Israeli military aggression on the Palestinians to break their will but to no avail," he noted. Meanwhile, Nasrallah warned Israel against venturing to attack Lebanon and take advantage of "the resistance" (Hezbollah) preoccupation with the Syrian affair. "We are well-prepared and fully-equipped to respond to any aggression," he made it clear. Commenting on the domestic affairs he advised the rival political parties to shoulder their responsibilities for finding a political solution to the current stalemate and put the national interests of Lebanon above any partisan considerations. He also called on the politicians not to politicize the issue of the nine Lebanese nationals abducted in Syria a year ago. (end) ayb.gb KUNA 302326 Apr 13NNNN

Israel calls up army reservists for drill in the north

Source : Reuters

(Reuters) - Israel's military said on Tuesday it had called up hundreds of reservists for a drill in northern Israel where tensions are high with neighbors Syria and Lebanon, but a military spokesman said there was no change in the overall security situation.

Israel has been on high alert for spillover from Syria's civil war, which has included sporadic fire and Israeli frontier positions. It has also warned it would act to prevent Syria's sophisticated weapons from falling into the hands of Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

The drill - planned in advance as part of the annual training schedule - is meant to simulate a scenario of "quick escalation" in which troops would be sent to the north, the military said in statement. No specific details were included.

"The reality requires us to prepare accordingly and maintain high readiness," a senior officer from Israel's Northern Command said of the drill.

Chief military spokesman Brigadier-General Yoav Mordechai told Israel Radio: "This is an exercise, it is not connected to any change in the security situation."

Israel has enjoyed a decades-long, stable stand-off with Syria under President Bashar al- Assad, but fighting in the insurgency has drawn close to the Golan Heights, a strategic plateau Israel captured from Syria in a 1967 war.

Israel says its air force shot down a drone from Lebanon over the Mediterranean sea last week as it was approaching the Israeli coast. Hezbollah, which sent a drone deep into Israel in October, said it was not behind last week's incident.

Russia hails Hezbollah, says ready to cooperate with it

Source : Tehran Times

Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov has hailed the credibility of the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah, saying Moscow will cooperate with the popular movement.

“We cooperate with Hezbollah and respect the Lebanese people’s will… this party, which has proven its credibility [over the course of time], must [have its opinions] respected,” Bogdanov said on Friday in Lebanon after meeting with Lebanese MP Mohammad Raad, who heads the Lebanese resistance movement's parliamentary bloc.

Bogdanov further said that the Lebanese officials should find solutions to their political problems through dialogue.

“There might be different viewpoints stemming from various parties but we think the Lebanese should look for solutions via a comprehensive national dialogue,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Bogdanov handed over to Lebanon’s President Michel Suleiman a letter of support from his Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Putin praised in the letter the efforts made by Suleiman to maintain stability in Lebanon, voicing support for the president’s efforts to preserve stability in Lebanon as well as dialogue among the various Lebanese parties.

Bogdanov also called for collective regional and international efforts to help find a political solution to the unrest in Syria, reiterating Russia’s opposition to any military intervention in the crisis-hit Syria.

The Russian envoy said that his visit was aimed at supporting Lebanon regarding Syria’s refugees and holding an international conference to discuss the issue.

Syria has been gripped by a deadly unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of government security forces and army personnel, have been killed in the violence.

Damascus says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

The Syrian government says the West and its regional allies including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey are supporting the militants.

Several international human rights organizations have accused the militants operating in Syria of committing war crimes.

Israeli jets 'intruded in Lebanon' - expert

Source : Voice of Russia

Alastair Crooke, a Beirut-based British analyst, head of the Conflicts Forum, and a former Advisor on ME issues to Javier Solana, shares his take on the alleged Israeli air strike at a Syrian military research facility near Damascus

There is a certain amount of uncertainty about exactly what has been going on. I think it is clear now and the Syrian authorities have officially confirmed that there was a strike on a military research center which is not far from the Golan in southern Syria, it was destroyed and two guards were killed in that. That is generalized according to the Israeli press itself that this is a center which accumulates generally research from all sources and scientific experiment in a military sphere. And the Syrian Government has said that this was what it was also.

Now, also what was the case, that we know, one of the few things that are sure is that there was an intrusion of Israeli aircraft into Lebanon. There are reports that there was a strike on or near the border either in Syria or possibly just in Lebanon on crossing the border convoy of trucks. That convoy, it is suggested in the Israeli press, was bringing advanced weapons, not chemical weapons but conventional weapons, perhaps even components of surface-to-air missiles SA18 across and to the destination of Hezbollah from Syria.

Now, that has not been confirmed, no one has confirmed that on Israeli side or in Lebanon, or in Syria. And Hezbollah has made no statement beyond saying that it supports Syria, its people and its Army. So, there is no confirmation of the last one, but there are reports that there has been one.

The Hebrew Israeli press is also very clear in suggesting that this was the primary purpose of the over-flights in Lebanon and Syria, the military attack on the sovereign state, it was precisely what they call game changing weapons passing to Hezbollah from Syria. There is a long-long history to this and it is nothing new that there’ve been suggestions for a long time that weapons were passing to Hezbollah. None of this has been proven, and it has been raised periodically in the Israeli press.

I think what is quite striking too is that after the Israeli elections that took place a little while ago, the parliamentary elections in Israel, Prime Minister Netanyahu raised the issue of chemical weapons again in Syria and the danger of them falling into the hands of either the opposition or anti-Israeli elements essentially.

Indeed, even the Deputy Prime Minister went as far as saying that Israel might take preventive action. Equally, what was quite striking, was that official sources in Israel, foreign affairs officials actually then undermined the Prime Minister’s and the Deputy Prime Minister’s statements by saying there is nothing new happening with chemical weapons, there is no change in that positioning, there is nothing happening, there is nothing that requires any action on the part of Israel. So, the unnamed sources in Israel effectively countered the Prime Minister’s and deputy Prime Minister’s statements.

So, in a sense what we may be seeing is that the Prime Minister was proving his point by initiating a military action in Syria to underline that there is a risk by actually taking military action and trying to suggest that there is an action. Even though that military action was not aimed at chemical weapons facilities, even according to the Israeli press, but was aimed more at conventional surface-to-air missile shipments. Possibly no one knows if this is true or untrue, or what was struck, or if indeed a convoy even was struck on the Lebanese-Syrian border. That’s the stage of uncertainty at the moment, I should say, rather than the stage of what we actually done.

Sir, talking about the threat of chemical weapons in Syria, I’ve seen some kind of a leak in the Internet of the alleged conversation between two ground officers in one of the countries around Syria who were discussing a possibility of taking chemical weapons from elsewhere, like from Libya for instance, and bringing them to Syria. So, my point is that perhaps nowadays with all the turmoil in the region it would be so easy to stage some kind of use of chemical weapons by Mr. Assad’s Government. So, anyway, do you think that such kind of scenario could be implemented, theoretically?

Sir alking about the threat of chemical weapons in Syria, I’ve seen some kind of a leak in the Internet of the alleged conversation between two ground officers in one of the countries around Syria who were discussing a possibility of taking chemical weapons from elsewhere, like from Libya for instance, and bringing them to Syria. So, my point is that perhaps nowadays with all the turmoil in the region it would be so easy to stage some kind of use of chemical weapons by Mr. Assad’s Government. So, anyway, do you think that such kind of scenario could be implemented, theoretically?

Yes, I think you are referring to a publication of an alleged email from a European company, quite well-known and large company, about the possibility of transferring components for chemical weapons or agents to Syria in order for it to be alleged that it was action taken by the Syrian Government against the opposition, and therefore was intended as a black operation in order to delegitimize the Syrian Government.

I have to say that I’ve seen absolutely nothing to suggest that that email was true. We don’t know, there’s been no suggestion, no confirmation that it is an authentic email, or no collaboration that that has actually happened or indeed that components were moved or both of that nature. We can add that we do know that actually other things are moving from Libya. It is quite clear that weapons and other components are moving and have moved for some time from the theatre of Libya directly to the opposition in Syria. But there’s been no confirmation that those include chemical components at all.

But I think you are quite right that there is a fear because throughout the history of this type the Western states have used what are known as black operations – operations intended to deceive the public opinion and to make it appear that it is actually someone else that has initiated the operation, whereas it has actually been encouraged and supported by the Western intelligence services with the intent of trying to bring about further tension and the downfall of a particular group or government.

Sir, getting back to the international diplomacy, as far as I understand there are two distinct trends. One is a heightened anti- Assad rhetoric in the UN, in all kinds of official statements. And on the other hand there are rumors that perhaps with the coming of a new Secretary of State in the US the US could somehow soften their policy in the region, including in the Syrian issue. Do you think that this is a viable option?

Well, I think that the two elements you identified are both happening. I think one element is that at the moment we are expecting and see the beginnings of military actions, more extensive military operations by the Syrian Army and the Syrian Government in this coming period. And that is likely to provoke from those who sponsor and support the opposition calls for Western intervention in response to this. There has been quite a strong strategic military shift from the inside to the advantage of President Assad and the Syrian Army, they have made considerable gains on the ground at the expense of the opposition. The momentum is moving that way and it is expected that that shift, that that campaign increase in the coming period.

So, it is not surprising that to expect that there will be calls for intervention to support the opposition during this period. And perhaps we may read the Iranian warning against the Western intervention made by Mr. Velayati, the advisor to the Supreme Leader, in his turn. But again, I think what we see from the US very clearly is a very strong reluctance certainly on the part of the President, perhaps not shared by all Congress, but certainly a desire on the part of the Administration not to get entangled in the conflict in Syria.

And I think there is another element to this that has become very important and very strong. First of all, there was if you like the Benghazi moment where it was found that having allied the West particularly with Islamist elements in Libya, they had a consulate in Benghazi attacked and the ambassador killed. But then subsequently in Mali we have seen the events there and hostages taken in Algeria. So, there is a real sense of anxiety also present in the West about the rise of radical Islamist movements, the concern about what consequences of this rise will be.

So, on the one hand they are engaged in fighting radical Islamist movements in Mali and cooperating with Algeria in the same way. Yet in Syria they are actually encouraging and giving the facilities, even though they claim to be nonlethal facilities, to those same militants in the interests of overthrowing the Assad. So, the basic contradiction in these policies I think is engaging into West and thinking which is now increasing the concern about what is happening in the wider region as a whole and the rise of radical groups across north Africa and southern African parts of the ME, and even now in parts of central Asia.

Lebanese media deny Israeli air strike

Source: Voice of Russia

Lebanon’s state-run Al-Watania news agency hasn’t confirmed an Israeli air strike close to the Syrian border. An unnamed Lebanese source earlier told Western media that Israeli air force had attacked an armed convoy that had crossed into Lebanon.

Reports of the raid came during the small hours, the source was cited as saying. No further details were immediately known.

A spokesman of Israel’s northern military district refused to comment.

Israel hits convoy on Syria-Lebanon border - security sources

Israel forces carried out a strike overnight on a weapons convoy coming from Syria in the Lebanon-Syria border area, security sources told reporters on Wednesday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"The Israeli air force blew up a convoy which had just crossed the border from Syria into Lebanon," one source said, without giving a precise location for the attack or saying what the convoy was carrying.

An Israeli military spokeswoman declined to comment on the report.

Israel fighter jets hit targets on Lebanese-Syrian border

Israeli forces have attacked a target on the Syrian-Lebanese border overnight, a western diplomat and a security source said on Wednesday, at a time of growing concern in the Jewish state over the fate of Syrian chemical and conventional weapons.

Several squads of Israeli air force jets violated Lebanese airspace at 2 a.m. local time Wednesday, the Lebanese army reported in a statement earlier on Wednesday. It said four warplanes flew over the southernmost coastal town of Naqoura, hovered for several hours over villages in southern Lebanon before leaving the country's airspace.

The sources, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the issue, had no further information about what might have been hit or where precisely the attack happened.

The Israel Defense Forces refused to confirm or deny the report. "We do not comment on reports of this kind,"an IDF spokeswoman said.

Lebanon reports heavy presence of Israeli jets in its airspace

Lebanon said on Wednesday Israeli jets had flown over its territory overnight, part of apparently increased air activity which comes as Israel has expressed concern about weapons in neighbouring Syria falling out of government control.

A Lebanese army statement said that four Israeli planes entered Lebanese air space at 4.30 p.m (1430GMT) on Tuesday. They were replaced four hours later by another group of planes which overflewsouthern Lebanon until 2 a.m and a third mission took over, finally leaving at 7.55 a.m on Wednesday morning.

Lebanon frequently complains that Israeli jets overfly its territory. However the recent activity was much more concentrated than usual.

There was no explanation for the operations in the region, bordering southern Syria. The statement made no mention of planes entering Syrian airspace.

Israel's vice premier Silvan Shalom said on Sunday that any sign that Syria's grip on its chemical weapons is slipping, as President Bashar al-Assad fights rebels trying to overthrow him, could trigger Israeli military strikes.

The Beirut Music Hall opens a branch in Dubai

Source : Alarabiya.net

The Beirut Music Hall, which was established in 2003, is thought of as a large part of the nightlife of Lebanon’s capital. The venue which celebrates international music hope to expand it’s locations globally including Istanbul, Barcelona and Dubai, The National recently reported.

Michel Elefteriades the owner of The Beirut Music Hall told The National that Dubai fit the Beirut Music Hall's ethos perfectly saying that “There is something miraculous about Dubai, The city is doing well while the world is in crisis. A lot of people thought Dubai would never be the same after the financial crisis, but what happened was the opposite - the city is continuing to grow while others, especially in Europe, are still suffering.”

Elefteriades said that another reason he was drawn to Dubai was the venue which will be able to accommodate up to 1,000 audience members, the 500 square meter hall is larger than the one in Beirut, however the interior will be similar to the original in Lebanon. The stage will be detailed with draping red velvet curtains and hand-sculptured roses.

Elefteriades said “A big stage without creativity is not art and a small stage with creativity leads to frustration, Dubai will allow me to be more creative in the lighting and projections. I can really create something good here,” he also said that although the stages are almost identical the Dubai Music Hall with technically be better.

Elefteriades explained that his initial idea for the music hall was “to DJ- but in a live music kind of way.” He said that “we want people to come and enjoy the night, not have the feeling of just watching the show.”

The music hall doesn’t host cover bands or headline act, however they are famously known for keeping the identity of performers a mystery to the audience as they take to the stage and perform a ten minute set.

The music that will be showcased at the music hall will be mostly world music ranging from traditional and classic Arab songs, reggae, bossa nova and gypsy music from the Balkans, the key to a lot of the artists being originality. Artists will also have the opportunity to cover a pop song if they wish as long as they are able to put their own twist on it.

Elefteriades has promised that the Dubai venue will be even more eclectic then the original and will cater to Dubai’s cosmopolitan crowd. “There will be some new acts that have never played in Beirut. There will be some Indian music at a later stage, and there will also be a Russian folk music band performing,” he said.

The first few months will be dominated by acts that Elefteriades is familiar with and have previously performed in the Beirut Music Hall, however he has said that he will eventually scout for local talent.

Lebanese Rally at French Embassy to Protest Delay in Freeing Abdallah

Source : www.islamicinvitationturkey

Lebanese demonstrators blocked the road outside the French embassy in Beirut on Monday after a French court postponed the release of Lebanese leftist striver George Abdallah, who has spent 28 years in jail, as Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned the “unjustified” delay.

According to Naharnet news website, dozens of supporters of Abdallah rallied in front of Paris’ embassy in the Mat-haf area, condemning the policies of France and accusing it of being a proxy for the United States, which has openly rejected the release of the Lebanese activist, Almanar reported.

A number of young demonstrators tried to storm the embassy but were repelled by security forces who reinforced their presence in the vicinity of the French diplomatic building. Both the organizers of the protest and the family condemned any attempt to attack the embassy or security forces protecting its premises, local media reported.

“We reject to be turned by some enthusiastic youths into guards for the embassy. We urge everyone to abide by democratic means and refrain from hurling any object at the embassy’s building,” Joseph Abdallah, George’s brother, told reporters at the scene.

Meanwhile, PM Mikati telephoned French Ambassador to Lebanon Patrice Paoli, inquiring about the reasons behind delaying Abdallah’s release.

“The delay in freeing Abdallah is an unjustified step that violates his civil rights,” Mikati told Paoli during the phone call, according to a statement released by the premier’s office.

“The relevant French authorities must speed up his release so that he returns to his homeland and family,” Mikati added, stressing that “the Lebanese government has been following this case ever since it assumed its responsibilities and was preparing to welcome Abdallah upon his arrival in Lebanon.”

Earlier on Monday, Abdallah’s brother, Joseph, threatened to organize protests outside the French embassy after France’s interior minister refused to sign the Lebanese leftist’s expulsion order.

A French court ruled last week that Abdallah can be released on condition he is expelled from French territory.

The 61-year-old was granted parole in November on condition of his expulsion but was not released pending a decision on an appeal by prosecutors.

The court in Paris confirmed the parole decision and said the interior ministry had until January 14 to issue the expulsion order
