US Warns Russia of Sending S-300 Missiles to Syria: Puts Israel at Risk

Source : http://www.almanar.com.lb/

US Secretary of State John Kerry strongly condemned Russia over its decision to sell an advanced missile system to Damascus, considering it puts Israel at risk.

Speaking from Washington, Kerry also warned that the planned delivery of S-300 air defense missiles to Damascus “was not helpful” as Russia and the US prepare for Geneva 2, to try to end the Syrian conflict.

Kerry said the delivery would have a “profoundly negative impact on the balance of interests and the stability of the region, and it does put Israel at risk”.

It is “not helpful to have the S-300 transferred to the region while you are trying to organize this peace and create peace," he added, questioning whether Russia was “fully committed to ending Syria's conflict”.

Resistance front has right to respond to Israel’s attacks on Syria

Source : Tehran Times

Western governments’ recent allegations that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has used chemical weapons against his own people should be regarded as a new scenario meant to advance the objectives of the anti-Syria front and prepare the ground for military intervention.

U.S. President Barack Obama recently said that if the Syrian government has used chemical weapons, it has crossed a red line. Obama’s remarks opened the way for an extensive propaganda campaign against Assad, who has been very successful in defusing numerous plots against his country over the past two years.

In fact, Assad has no need to use prohibited weapons since he has effective control over the situation on the ground.

Quite the contrary, it is the terrorists operating in Syria who have resorted to chemical weapons in their war against Assad’s legitimate government. There is abundant evidence proving that the rebels have actually used such weapons in the Khan al-Asal region.

However, in the wake of the anti-Syria front’s allegations, Israel recently carried out airstrikes on the outskirts of Damascus. Many pundits say that the attacks were orchestrated by the United States in order to indirectly provoke Syria into entering a military confrontation. But in reality, the U.S. will be unable to increase its involvement in Syria since it is still suffering from the repercussions of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Over the past few years, Syria has repeatedly exercised restraint in the face of Israel’s illegal attacks. However, this time Syria seems to be planning a response to Israel’s recent acts of aggression. In light of the problematic situation in the region, such a response from Syria could seriously endanger the existence of Israel and pave the way for an all-out war in the Middle East. Even the United States, Russia, and their allies may become involved in such a scenario.

The defense of Syria is also a very important issue for the Muslim world in general, since the country is regarded as a major component of the resistance front and the main buffer against Israel’s hegemonistic policies. Thus, responding to Israel’s illegitimate attacks is clearly an inalienable right of the resistance front.

Syria to receive advanced Russian air defense: report

Source : Al Akhbar English

Syria has already began payments for a $900 million purchase of an advanced air defense system from Russia and an initial delivery was due within three months, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday citing US officials.

Israel has asked Russia not to sell Syria the S-300, which could help President Bashar al-Assad fend off foreign military intervention, Israeli officials said on Thursday.

"We have raised objections to this (sale) with the Russians, and the Americans have too," an Israeli official told Reuters.

There was no immediate comment from Moscow or Damascus.

The S-300 is designed to shoot down planes and missiles at 200 kilometer ranges. It would enhance Syria's current Russian-supplied defenses, which did not deter Israel from launching devastating air strikes around Damascus last weekend.

In 2010, Russia backed out of a tentative S-300 sale to Iran that had been in the works for years. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev cited UN sanctions imposed that year over Iran's defiance of international demands to curb its nuclear program.

Israel and the United States, which threaten military attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities if diplomatic alternatives fail, had lobbied Moscow to drop the deal with Tehran.

Israel reportedly attacked on Syrian soil twice over the weekend, in a move that prompted demonstrations in front of Israeli embassies and UN headquarters across the region.

On Saturday, Israel carried out an air strike into Syria, supposedly targeting a shipment of missiles bound for Hezbollah in neighboring Lebanon.

The target of Friday's raid was not a Syrian chemical weapons facility, a regional security source earlier told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

A US official, who also declined to be identified, had told Reuters on Friday that the target was apparently a building.

The attack took place after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's security cabinet approved it in a secret meeting on Thursday night, the security source said.

On Sunday, Israel struck a military facility overnight outside Damascus.

The official SANA news agency said Israel was responsible for the attack on the Jamraya military research center in the Eastern Ghouta region.

The attacks came as Israeli fighter jets flew over the Lebanese capital Beirut repeatedly the week prior.

Former Foreign Minister: Turkey should not have severed ties with Syria

Source  :  Trend.Az

Turkey should not have severed ties with Syria. "Syria is our neighbor, and if Turkey had not severed ties with Syria, it could have played a very active role in the events. The rupture of relations caused certain problems," former Turkish Foreign Minister Hikmet Çetin told Trend on Thursday.

According to him, Turkey could have played a more active role in the Syrian issue; however that is not possible due to the rupture of relations.

"Turkey should have shown restraint and continue the dialogue. Syria is our neighbor. Turkey has close ties with Syria, we share a common border. Therefore, Turkey could have played a more active role in the peace process, but the situation deteriorated following the rupture of ties," Çetin said.

According to the former Foreign Minister, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad can not remain in power after the death of so many people. However, no one knows what awaits Syria after him.

"No one has any plans for the post-Assad period. Nobody knows who will come to power after him, including the U.S. and the EU. Assad must leave, however the Syrian opposition is too heterogeneous. It includes terrorist organizations, radicals and other forces. Syria is a peculiar country with Muslim, Christian, Kurdish, Turkish and Armenian populations. Various forms of religion are practiced in the country, including Sunnism and Shism. Assad must leave, but first he must establish stability in the country in order to prevent the creation of a dangerous situation. The latter may have negative repercussions for the entire region, including in Turkey. That is, until today, nothing can be said about the immediate future of Syria," the former Minister said.

The conflict between the government and the opposition in Syria has continued since March 2011. According to various sources, 70,000 people have been killed; nearly half a million were forced to leave their homes during this period. Syrian authorities claim that they oppose well-armed trained fighters arriving from abroad. According to official Damascus, a number of armed groups are directly linked to the Al-Qaeda terrorist network.

3 Palestinians killed in Syria shelling, activists say

Source :  Maan News Agency

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Three Palestinians were killed and several others injured when Syrian government forces shelled a Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus on Monday, activists said.

A Palestinian activist group said that an elementary school was hit by artillery shells in al-Bazour street, killing two children and a man.

Hisham Mahmoud, in the third grade, Farahat Mubarak, a fifth grader, and a man identified and Ehab Abu Risha, were named as those killed by locals.

At least 7 other children were injured in the incident.

In early March, the Action Group for Palestinians of Syria said in a statement that around 1,038 Palestinians had been killed in the 22-month Syrian conflict, which has claimed the lives of around 70,000 people and created hundreds of thousands of refugees.

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees said it was shocked by an incident in March in which two Palestinian men were hanged in public on Palestine Street in Yarmouk refugee camp.

A picture of Hisham Mahmoud published on the Facebook page of a Palestinian activist group in Damascus

Despite repeated statements from Palestinian officials that Syria camps are neutral in the internal conflict, Palestinians have been adversely affected by fighting in the two year conflict.

In December, heavy fighting broke out in Yarmouk camp between Syrian rebels and the army, causing the large scale displacement of Palestinian refugees.

Syria hosts half a million Palestinian refugees, descendants of those admitted after the creation of Israel in 1948, and has always cast itself as a champion of the Palestinian struggle, sponsoring several guerrilla factions.

The embassy said in a statement that "engineer Houssam Khosh Newes, an Iranian development official working in Lebanon, was killed by "armed terrorist groups while he was returning to Beirut from the Syrian capital."

Media outlets reported that Khosh Newes was in the Syrian province of Aleppo evaluating development projects to reconstruct the northern city that is witnessing deadly clashes between the government forces and rebels.

Khosh Newes was appointed to help rebuild southern Lebanon by Iranian President Mahmound Ahmadinejad after the 2006 war between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah militia.

Syrian opposition chief willing to talk to VP Sharaa, 5 February 2013

Source : http://www.turkishweekly

Exiled Syrian opposition leader Mouaz al-Khatib has expanded on an offer to hold peace talks with the Syrian government, saying he is willing to sit down with the deputy of President Bashar al-Assad.

In interviews with Arab television networks on Monday, al-Khatib said he is extending a hand to Syrian Vice President Farouk al-Sharaa to negotiate what he called a "peaceful departure of the (Assad) regime."

The Syrian National Coalition leader first made the offer last week, saying it was conditional on the government freeing tens of thousands of prisoners and providing passports to Syrians exiled by a nearly two-year-long rebellion against Assad's authoritarian rule. The proposal angered some members of the opposition coalition, which previously had demanded that Assad leave power before negotiations could begin.

In his latest interviews, al-Khatib said he wants a dialogue with the Assad government because he has concluded that only Syrians can find a solution to the country's civil war. The international community has been divided on how to respond to the conflict, with Western powers and their Arab allies demanding Assad quit, while allies of the Syrian president such as Iran and Russia insist that no foreign power should dictate Syria's future.

Al-Khatib said his offer of talks puts the ball in the government's court. There was no immediate response from Assad, who has proposed his own national reconciliation process that offers elections and a new constitution but keeps himself in power.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said that if the Assad government has any interest in peace, it should "sit down and talk now" with the opposition coalition.

In the latest fighting on Monday, rights activists said government forces bombarded rebel-held areas around Damascus including Douma with air strikes and artillery.

U.N. humanitarian agency UNICEF said it has started an operation to deliver water-treatment chemicals to Syria to provide safe water supplies to 10 million people, almost half the country's population. It said the first four trucks carrying 80 tons of chlorine crossed from Jordan into Syria on Sunday, bound for the regions of Homs, Aleppo, Hama and Idli

Israeli jets 'intruded in Lebanon' - expert

Source : Voice of Russia

Alastair Crooke, a Beirut-based British analyst, head of the Conflicts Forum, and a former Advisor on ME issues to Javier Solana, shares his take on the alleged Israeli air strike at a Syrian military research facility near Damascus

There is a certain amount of uncertainty about exactly what has been going on. I think it is clear now and the Syrian authorities have officially confirmed that there was a strike on a military research center which is not far from the Golan in southern Syria, it was destroyed and two guards were killed in that. That is generalized according to the Israeli press itself that this is a center which accumulates generally research from all sources and scientific experiment in a military sphere. And the Syrian Government has said that this was what it was also.

Now, also what was the case, that we know, one of the few things that are sure is that there was an intrusion of Israeli aircraft into Lebanon. There are reports that there was a strike on or near the border either in Syria or possibly just in Lebanon on crossing the border convoy of trucks. That convoy, it is suggested in the Israeli press, was bringing advanced weapons, not chemical weapons but conventional weapons, perhaps even components of surface-to-air missiles SA18 across and to the destination of Hezbollah from Syria.

Now, that has not been confirmed, no one has confirmed that on Israeli side or in Lebanon, or in Syria. And Hezbollah has made no statement beyond saying that it supports Syria, its people and its Army. So, there is no confirmation of the last one, but there are reports that there has been one.

The Hebrew Israeli press is also very clear in suggesting that this was the primary purpose of the over-flights in Lebanon and Syria, the military attack on the sovereign state, it was precisely what they call game changing weapons passing to Hezbollah from Syria. There is a long-long history to this and it is nothing new that there’ve been suggestions for a long time that weapons were passing to Hezbollah. None of this has been proven, and it has been raised periodically in the Israeli press.

I think what is quite striking too is that after the Israeli elections that took place a little while ago, the parliamentary elections in Israel, Prime Minister Netanyahu raised the issue of chemical weapons again in Syria and the danger of them falling into the hands of either the opposition or anti-Israeli elements essentially.

Indeed, even the Deputy Prime Minister went as far as saying that Israel might take preventive action. Equally, what was quite striking, was that official sources in Israel, foreign affairs officials actually then undermined the Prime Minister’s and the Deputy Prime Minister’s statements by saying there is nothing new happening with chemical weapons, there is no change in that positioning, there is nothing happening, there is nothing that requires any action on the part of Israel. So, the unnamed sources in Israel effectively countered the Prime Minister’s and deputy Prime Minister’s statements.

So, in a sense what we may be seeing is that the Prime Minister was proving his point by initiating a military action in Syria to underline that there is a risk by actually taking military action and trying to suggest that there is an action. Even though that military action was not aimed at chemical weapons facilities, even according to the Israeli press, but was aimed more at conventional surface-to-air missile shipments. Possibly no one knows if this is true or untrue, or what was struck, or if indeed a convoy even was struck on the Lebanese-Syrian border. That’s the stage of uncertainty at the moment, I should say, rather than the stage of what we actually done.

Sir, talking about the threat of chemical weapons in Syria, I’ve seen some kind of a leak in the Internet of the alleged conversation between two ground officers in one of the countries around Syria who were discussing a possibility of taking chemical weapons from elsewhere, like from Libya for instance, and bringing them to Syria. So, my point is that perhaps nowadays with all the turmoil in the region it would be so easy to stage some kind of use of chemical weapons by Mr. Assad’s Government. So, anyway, do you think that such kind of scenario could be implemented, theoretically?

Sir alking about the threat of chemical weapons in Syria, I’ve seen some kind of a leak in the Internet of the alleged conversation between two ground officers in one of the countries around Syria who were discussing a possibility of taking chemical weapons from elsewhere, like from Libya for instance, and bringing them to Syria. So, my point is that perhaps nowadays with all the turmoil in the region it would be so easy to stage some kind of use of chemical weapons by Mr. Assad’s Government. So, anyway, do you think that such kind of scenario could be implemented, theoretically?

Yes, I think you are referring to a publication of an alleged email from a European company, quite well-known and large company, about the possibility of transferring components for chemical weapons or agents to Syria in order for it to be alleged that it was action taken by the Syrian Government against the opposition, and therefore was intended as a black operation in order to delegitimize the Syrian Government.

I have to say that I’ve seen absolutely nothing to suggest that that email was true. We don’t know, there’s been no suggestion, no confirmation that it is an authentic email, or no collaboration that that has actually happened or indeed that components were moved or both of that nature. We can add that we do know that actually other things are moving from Libya. It is quite clear that weapons and other components are moving and have moved for some time from the theatre of Libya directly to the opposition in Syria. But there’s been no confirmation that those include chemical components at all.

But I think you are quite right that there is a fear because throughout the history of this type the Western states have used what are known as black operations – operations intended to deceive the public opinion and to make it appear that it is actually someone else that has initiated the operation, whereas it has actually been encouraged and supported by the Western intelligence services with the intent of trying to bring about further tension and the downfall of a particular group or government.

Sir, getting back to the international diplomacy, as far as I understand there are two distinct trends. One is a heightened anti- Assad rhetoric in the UN, in all kinds of official statements. And on the other hand there are rumors that perhaps with the coming of a new Secretary of State in the US the US could somehow soften their policy in the region, including in the Syrian issue. Do you think that this is a viable option?

Well, I think that the two elements you identified are both happening. I think one element is that at the moment we are expecting and see the beginnings of military actions, more extensive military operations by the Syrian Army and the Syrian Government in this coming period. And that is likely to provoke from those who sponsor and support the opposition calls for Western intervention in response to this. There has been quite a strong strategic military shift from the inside to the advantage of President Assad and the Syrian Army, they have made considerable gains on the ground at the expense of the opposition. The momentum is moving that way and it is expected that that shift, that that campaign increase in the coming period.

So, it is not surprising that to expect that there will be calls for intervention to support the opposition during this period. And perhaps we may read the Iranian warning against the Western intervention made by Mr. Velayati, the advisor to the Supreme Leader, in his turn. But again, I think what we see from the US very clearly is a very strong reluctance certainly on the part of the President, perhaps not shared by all Congress, but certainly a desire on the part of the Administration not to get entangled in the conflict in Syria.

And I think there is another element to this that has become very important and very strong. First of all, there was if you like the Benghazi moment where it was found that having allied the West particularly with Islamist elements in Libya, they had a consulate in Benghazi attacked and the ambassador killed. But then subsequently in Mali we have seen the events there and hostages taken in Algeria. So, there is a real sense of anxiety also present in the West about the rise of radical Islamist movements, the concern about what consequences of this rise will be.

So, on the one hand they are engaged in fighting radical Islamist movements in Mali and cooperating with Algeria in the same way. Yet in Syria they are actually encouraging and giving the facilities, even though they claim to be nonlethal facilities, to those same militants in the interests of overthrowing the Assad. So, the basic contradiction in these policies I think is engaging into West and thinking which is now increasing the concern about what is happening in the wider region as a whole and the rise of radical groups across north Africa and southern African parts of the ME, and even now in parts of central Asia.

UN Security Council gets Syrian letter on reported Israeli attack: president

Xinhua

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- The president of the UN Security Council for January, Masood Khan, on Thursday confirmed that Syria has sent a letter to the 15-nation UN body on the reported Israeli air strike on Syria, saying that the council is " monitoring" the subsequent heightened tensions.

Khan, the Pakistani UN ambassador who holds the rotating council presidency for January, made the remarks at a press conference here to mark the end of his month-long presidency. Kim Soo, the permanent representative of the Republic of Korea, is expected to take over the council presidency on Friday.

"Things are developing very rapidly, this incident has taken place," Khan said. "We have received a communication from the permanent representative of Syria."

However, the council president did not disclose any further detail of the Syrian letter, but he simply said, "We are just in the process of translating that communication."

Israeli war jets carried out an air strike at dawn on Wednesday, destroying a military research facility in the Jamarya suburb of Damascus, the Syrian capital, the Syrian state-run media reported. Western media said that the air strike targeted a convoy carrying sophisticated anti-aircraft weaponry from Syria to Lebanon's Hezbollah.

"The council members are aware of the situation and it is the preference of the council members, in fact they've been working on this for a long time, that there should be stability in the region, " Khan said. "This region should not become more volatile."

Earlier on Thursday, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted with "grave concern" reports of Israeli air strikes in Syria and called on all concerned to prevent an escalation of tensions in the region.

"The secretary-general notes with grave concern reports of Israeli air strikes in Syria," said a note issued by Ban's spokesman. "At this time, the United Nations does not have details of the reported incident. Nor is the United Nations in a position to independently verify what has occurred."

"The secretary-general calls on all concerned to prevent tensions or their escalation in the region, and to strictly abide by international law, in particular in respect of territorial integrity and sovereignty of all countries in the region," said the note.

Syria opposition fighters fire at Assad’s palace, shell military airport

Source : Alarabiya.net Mobile |

Opposition fighters reportedly fired at the Syrian presidential palace, but missed, and shelled the Mazzeh military airport and intelligence headquarters in Damascus, Al Arabiya TV reported on Wednesday.

The attacks were an indication of the violence moving increasingly from the suburbs into districts of the Syrian capital.

A car bomb exploded overnight in the southern Qadam neighborhood, causing at least one death, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based watchdog that relies on a network of activists and medics on the ground.

Wednesday's attempted mortar strike on Assad's palace drew comparisons with a bomb attack in a highly guarded district of Damascus in July that killed four of the president's top lieutenants.

In the Mazzeh district, home to many embassies and offices of the security services, three civilians were killed and 12 wounded from mortar fire, it said.

Opposition fighters, meanwhile, clashed with pro-regime Palestinian forces in the southern Hajar al-Aswad district and the nearby Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmuk, AFP reported, which has become a new focal point of violence.

10 members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC), a faction loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, were killed by rebel fighters, Reuters reported.

Home to some 148,000 residents, the camp has been the scene of fierce fighting between the rebels and the PFLP-GC.

Wednesday’s violence followed bomb attacks in the suburbs of Damascus on Tuesday, including three explosions in the western Qudsaya area, that killed 19 people and wounded more than 50, according to the Observatory.

Elsewhere in the country, regime air power kept up strikes over northern Aleppo and the surrounding region on Wednesday as rebels continued their months-long battle for control of the commercial hub.

The violence on Tuesday left 150 dead, including 79 civilians, 48 soldiers and 23 rebels, said the Observatory, which says 36,000 people have died since the outbreak of the revolt against Assad’s regime in March 2011.

Cameron visits Syrian refugee camp

British Prime Minister David Cameron on Wednesday toured a desert refugee camp for Syrians in northern Jordan, walking down a dusty road between the tents before visiting a U.N.-run school.

“Right here in Jordan I am hearing appalling stories about what has happened inside Syria so one of the first things I want to talk to Barack about is how we must do more to try and solve this crisis,” he said in an official statement released in London.

His comments came in a message of congratulations to U.S. President Barack Obama on his re-election.

Dressed casually in black trousers, a grey shirt and a sporting a Remembrance poppy, Cameron took time to speak to some of the more than 36,000 Syrians housed in tents and caravans in the Zaatari refugee camp near the Syria border.

The British premier arrived in Jordan on Tuesday night on the last leg of Middle East visit that also took him to the United Arab Emirates and to Saudi Arabia.

On arriving at the camp early morning, Cameron headed to offices of the United Nations, which runs the camp, before touring the facility.

Crowds of excited kids played football but did not seem to know who the visitor was.

“Is he the king?” one of them asked.

Inside the school, a group of children sang to Cameron in Arabic. The prime minister left the camp after visiting the school and was later to hold talks with Jordan’s King Abdullah.

The visit to the camp comes after Cameron told Al Arabiya on Tuesday he would support granting Assad a safe passage out of Syria to end the nation’s bloodshed.

Jordan says it is hosting more than 200,000 Syrian refugees, who have fled violence ravaging their homeland since a popular uprising erupted more than 19 months ago.

Strategic analysis in the context of Iran / Syria to follow the next time

I will think of Syria after attack on the opposite of proximal Turkey via Aleppo in the north and the south of France troops, the EU, NATO attack by U.S. / Israel, Syria in the second week of November, with air force and naval vessels. Israel will move with troops via the Golan to Damascus, then to use a proximal maneuver as a copy and follow in the attack on Iran.  Do not forget the wine message from Interfax in context Russian naval base of Tartus. -
The aspect in the context of Hezbollah, the Lebanon - North, the border of Gaza / Rafah to Egypt is not without value. Here are the weak point of the Israeli army 's defense ?  In the north, Hezbollah is firing rockets 60.000.
In Gaza, many Muslims are will attack Israel via Egypt/Rafah. No one knows the consequence of what it means to attack the U.S. / Israel and Iran and NATO .  China will never allow a lot of troops on its western boundary.
Nor should we forget the invitation of President Assad in the context of China in recent days .  China already knew from Syria's exclusion from the OIC ?
Two weeks ago, China has already sent two frigates into the Mediterranean via the Suez . 1 week later the UK and France before making maneuvers Cyprus -Turkey- Italy!
